Using Fences To Keep Pests Out Of Your Garden
Though home gardeners often overlook garden fences when planning their vegetable garden, protecting your plants against animal damage is an important part of landscaping and should not be neglected if you want a healthy, plentiful harvest. Not only do garden fences work to keep a pet or other unwanted animal out of your garden, a stylish fence can be a perfect backdrop to your garden. Garden fences are known and used to divide a garden from surrounding landscape areas such as lawn, sidewalk, or driveway and are often very aesthetically pleasing and make your garden look even better.
Fences can be an effective method of keeping pests out of your garden and tend to work best when the animal doesn’t know what the fence is protecting but while this type of large solid fence may provide a visual block, it will not block odors and can block desired views or violate local codes. A better solution for small pests would be to use a fence of woven wire or 2 inch poultry netting, 2 to 3 feet high and place around the area that you want protected. The bottom of the fence should be buried in the ground at least 6 inches to prevent animals from digging under the fence. Electric fences are especially effective for woodchucks and rabbits but if choosing this option, please make sure that you use a battery powered source that startles but does not injure the animal.
Garden fence designs are available in a wide range of styles and expense. Picket fencing is simple to install and looks good last for years while split rail fences can give a country look to your garden. Garden fences can also be made of low carbon steel wire or aluminum alloy wire through welding and weaving and this type of fences do not rust and last much longer. There are also wooden fences made of posts or stakes joined together by boards or quite similar to wood, vinyl fences are easily available in the readymade form in the lumberyards and home stores. Vinyl fences are made of significantly the same material as the vinyl siding and vinyl windows and require minimal maintenance, and are easily available in various styles and quality. Another option is using dry stonewalls but this involves much time and money. Regardless of the style chosen, the fence should be a good match with the house.
